What is the 80/20 rule in Pilates?

Mar 21 2026

Life can be interesting when this 80/20 rule comes into play. It can be applied to so many different aspects.

When it comes to Pilates, the 80/20 rule refers to the requirement to focus 80% of your effort on quality form and proper breath control, and 20% on movement speed or intensity.

Pilates is about control, not necessarily speed or pushing yourself to exhaustion – in saying this, our full body workouts typically follow the method of progressive overload so your muscles will only have maybe 2 reps left before you can no longer continue! When done correctly, even small, precise movements can lead to improvements.

Always advise us of your specific situation and goals, so that we can tailor things to YOU! When you create an account in our system, you will be asked for your goals and if any issues or concerns you would like to address.

You can either do this via the login icon top-right hand side of each page on our site, or you can download ‘Studio High Street Pilates’ app in both Android and Apple. That’s a customised app so you might prefer it!
