Pilates for Athletes

For decades, the standard formula for athletic success was simple: lift heavy and run fast. But if you look behind the scenes of today’s elite sporting clubs, from the NBA to the Premier League, you’ll find a much more precise tool in their arsenal, ie Reformer Pilates.
Far from being just a ‘stretch class’, Pilates is increasingly becoming the non-negotiable foundation for athletes like LeBron James and Cristiano Ronaldo, who use it to sustain high performance well into their careers.

Pilates was originally designed for Men – by Joseph Pilates

Pilates wasn’t born in a luxury boutique studio. It was forged in a World War I internment camp. Its creator, Joseph Pilates, originally called his method ‘Contrology’. It referred to the mind, body and breath control required throughout the movements whilst engaging the deep stabilising muscles and pelvic floor.
He began by attaching bed springs to hospital beds so bedridden soldiers could exercise against resistance—an innovation that eventually became the Pilates Reformer.
By the 1920s, the practice moved to New York where Joe was training boxers such as Max Schmeling, World Heavy Weight Champion in 1930, and Charlie Massera, a young boxer from Pennsylvania. He trained soldiers, police officers, Wrestlers and martial artists, Skiers, divers, acrobats and circus performers. it was quickly adopted by the professional dance community. It was the best tool to correct muscle imbalances, improve body awareness and control, strengthening deep core stabilisers and for injury prevention.
The use of springs and other props within the method, provides ever changing information for the brain to process whilst engaging the deep stabilisers. This thereby creates lasting neuromuscular changes – hence is the Gold Standard today in enhancing sports performance, injury prevention and injury rehabilitation.

The Evidence: What the Science Says

Modern research has finally caught up with what Joseph Pilates knew a century ago. Studies now show that integrating Pilates provides a measurable edge across nearly every performance metric:
  • Explosive Power & Speed: Research on soccer players found that Reformer Pilates significantly improved 10m and 20m sprint times. Another study on basketball players showed an 8% increase in vertical jump height.
  • Agility & Technical Skill: Athletes in sports like badminton and volleyball saw a 12% improvement in agility and better precision in technical skills like serving and passing.
  • Injury Prevention: This is the biggest draw for the pros. By targeting the deep stabilising muscles around the spine and pelvis (the ‘Powerhouse’), Pilates eliminates the muscle imbalances that lead to common injuries like ACL tears, hamstring strains, and lower back pain.

Posture Correction for Teen’s with Pilates

Unlike traditional weightlifting, which often creates short, “bunchy” muscles, Pilates emphasises eccentric contractions—strengthening a muscle while it is lengthening. For a teenager in a growth spurt or an adult athlete under high training loads, this creates a body that is both strong and mobile, rather than just stiff. Posture reverts back to equilibrium when sports are balanced out with reformer pilates.
